Nick Thomson


Dr Nick Thomson is is an independent consultant who also operates under the CPM umbrella.  He has been providing management training and consultancy services to a wide range of public and private sector organisations throughout Australia and in Southeast Asia (on behalf of AFP and the former AusAID) since 1990. 

Industry expertise, experience and areas of specialisation

Nick has expertise and considerable experience in the delivery of training in the areas of strategic thinking, scenario planning, people management and presentation skills for public sector agencies such as the Australian Federal Police, the Department of Human Services, Geoscience Australia, the Australian Public Service Commission, Australian Competition & Consumer Commission and the former AusAID.

Currently he regularly co-presents, on behalf of the Centre for Public Management, a three-day residential program for Executive Level APS staff on Leadership and Strategic Intelligence. 

He has also developed and delivered a range of training in strategic thinking for Executive and Senior Executive level staff in various APS agencies, as well as at law enforcement conferences arranged by the Australian Federal Police in Singapore, Indonesia, China and New Zealand.

Nick regularly facilitates strategic planning, team building and strategy review workshops for public sector agencies such as the Department of Infrastructure, the Family Court of Australia, the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator and the Office of Transport Security. He has a relaxed, confident approach to program facilitation, and is widely recognised as a trainer/consultant who can work very effectively with diverse groups across a wide variety of workplace situations.

Qualifications, Accreditations and Certifications

Nick has a particular expertise in the area of strategic thinking, and in December 2006 was awarded a Doctor of Business Administration by the University of Canberra for his study of Scenario Planning in Australian Government.  His research involved an in-depth longitudinal study of the application of scenario planning (as a component of wider strategic and business planning processes) across six Australian Public Service agencies.

Nick is an accredited presenter for a number of instruments, including the Hermann Brain Dominance Instrument (HBDI), the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), the Team Management Index (TMI), the Executive Leadership Profile 360 degree feedback and the Strategic Intelligence Profile 360 degree feedback. Nick is a member of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Studies, and was a member of the Publications and Products Advisory Committee of the Institute from 1999 until December 2002. 
Nick continues to develop his skills, and has completed Executive Coaching Level 1 and Level 2 Accreditation with the Institute of Executive Coaching and Leadership.
